Social Media Policy

Effective Date: August 2026

At North Vancouver Counselling Lab, we value every client's privacy, confidentiality, safety, and therapeutic boundaries. This social media policy outlines how North Vancouver Counselling Lab and its counsellors use social media and how we manage online interactions with current, former, and prospective clients.

1. Professional Social Media Use: North Vancouver Counselling Lab may maintain professional social media accounts for the purpose of sharing information about counselling services, mental health education, resources, and updates about the practice. Social media content is intended for general educational and informational purposes and is not a substitute for individual counselling or professional advice.

2. Confidentiality and Privacy: Protecting client confidentiality is a fundamental part of our practice. North Vancouver Counselling Lab will not identify clients on social media or publicly disclose information that could reasonably identify an individual without their explicit written consent. We ask clients to consider their own privacy when interacting with our social media accounts, as comments, likes, follows, tags, and other online activity may be visible to others.

3. Following and Connecting on Social Media: To protect therapeutic boundaries and confidentiality, counsellors at North Vancouver Counselling Lab do not accept or initiate friend/follow requests from current or former clients on personal social media accounts. A counsellor may maintain a professional social media account for the practice; however, following or interacting with this account does not establish a counselling relationship. Clients are never expected to follow, like, comment on, or otherwise engage with North Vancouver Counselling Lab's social media accounts.

4. Social Media Messages and Direct Messages: Social media platforms are not considered secure or appropriate channels for communicating confidential or clinically sensitive information. Please do not use social media direct messages to share personal, confidential, or urgent mental health information. Messages sent through social media may not be monitored continuously and should not be relied upon for appointment scheduling, clinical communication, or urgent support. For practice-related communication, clients should use the appropriate communication methods provided by their counsellor, such as email, telephone, or the practice's online booking system.

5. Public Comments and Interactions: Clients and members of the public are welcome to engage respectfully with educational content posted by North Vancouver Counselling Lab. However, we may remove or restrict comments that contain confidential information, personal information, harassment, threats, discriminatory language, inappropriate content, spam, or information that could compromise someone's privacy or safety. We will not engage in public discussions about an individual's counselling, treatment, or personal circumstances.

6. Reviews and Testimonials: North Vancouver Counselling Lab respects each client's right to share their own experiences. However, to protect confidentiality, counsellors will not confirm or acknowledge that a person is or has been a client, even if the individual publicly identifies themselves as a client. We will not request that clients provide reviews or testimonials in a manner that could compromise their privacy or create pressure within the therapeutic relationship.

7. Photographs, Tags, and Mentions: North Vancouver Counselling Lab will obtain appropriate permission before posting identifiable photographs, testimonials, or other content involving clients. Clients are asked not to post photographs, videos, or other content that identifies other clients or individuals receiving services at the practice without their consent.

8. Professional Boundaries: Social media interactions can blur the distinction between professional and personal relationships. For this reason, counsellors at North Vancouver Counselling Lab maintain appropriate professional boundaries online. A counsellor may choose not to respond to a social media interaction, follow request, tag, mention, or other online contact to maintain confidentiality and the integrity of the therapeutic relationship. This is not intended to be personal or rejecting; it is part of maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

9. Emergencies and Crisis Situations: Social media, email, and other online messaging platforms are not appropriate for emergency or crisis communication. If you are experiencing an immediate emergency or believe you or someone else is at imminent risk of harm, please contact emergency services or an appropriate crisis service rather than contacting North Vancouver Counselling Lab through social media.

10. Changes to This Policy: North Vancouver Counselling Lab may update this policy periodically to reflect changes in professional standards, technology, privacy requirements, or the practice's social media use. Clients may contact Maddy Battisti if they have questions about this policy or about appropriate methods of communication.
